Dr. Julie Hoag
DVM
Dr Julie grew up in Woodstock and, after attending Univ of IL for both undergrad and vet school, worked in Woodstock doing mixed animal practice. in the late 80s, she became a Regional Medical Affairs Liaison for a well-known human asthma medication and shifted to working part-time in small animal medicine. After 17 years in this blended career – including a stay in Sweden as the Global Medical Affairs manager for Symbicort worldwide, her husband took a job in the diplomatic corps, and she became a trailing spouse! Dr Julie taught small animal medicine in Ghana during her two year stay there, also running the all-volunteer Zoo Enrichment Club. Next, she became the only American licensed to practice in Zambia where she both saw patients, ran large scale vaccine clinics and did animal rescue work. She also worked with the Zambian branch of the WCS on an anti-poaching initiative that works to end the hunger that drives the practice. Her role was to create health care learning materials for non-reading farmers, and to help in the promotion of organic produce raised by ex-poachers. Next, she moved to Nepal and was honored to receive a license there as well! In Nepal, Julie shifted to back teaching and research – helping to create the basis for a small animal clinical competency program and street dog care. After Nepal’s 2015 earthquake she returned to the area and to small animal practice.
Dr Julie loves all aspects of small animal health care, but the skill sets she likes to “brag about” are geriatric internal medicine, ophthalmology and of course, client education. She also indulges her passion for breeding and showing Morgan Horses – of which she likely has “too many” – including her World Champion NEF Transcend GCH and her beloved stallion Ingate’s Eye of the Tiger. Julie also has a collection of cats and a dog, Indy the Golden Retriever. She tries to stay fit and hopes to get back to Nepal soon!
